Also, we may be thinking/talking about 2 different mudguard designs. The earlier (up to '89) 740's rear mudguards attached down under the 'tubs' like the ones on the older (up to '85) 240's did. I don't like this design as much because it did not protect the body directly behind the rear wheels. I'm not sure what the front mudguards of that era looked like because they seem to be very uncommon. The mudguards I have on my 740 are a later design. They are made of hard molded plastic and are shaped to match the body contours where they attach. They fit very nicely and I can't really see how they *cause* rust problems. I think they're an excellent way to protect your Volvo in any climate. I wish the front ones were just a little bigger though........
