The Demon Rust 700 1988

As a result of the water leak in the driver's footwell there is what I thought to be light surface rust on the floor. I'm driving around without carpet or padding until the leak is 100% gone. Yesterday I opened the door and saw the parking lot through a dime-sized hole about where your left heel would rest. Between the frame and rocker panel. It would have been covered by the asphalt (?) mat glued to the floor but I've peeled away part of that as it was crumbling. I'll be pulling it all out when I start on the repair.

A big bummer IMO. I fingered the hole from the top and bottom and managed to make it bigger. About an inch long (front to back) and a 1/4" wide.

I've read about the POR-15 line of products and see in IPD's catalog a fabric mesh that can be laid over treated holes and then coated with another of POR-15's products.

Looking for advice here. I could be wrong, but it seems now that the area is no longer covered and wet, the rust is spreading. Will exposure to air accelerate the oxidation? I'm thinking I'd better start the repair very soon.

Thanks,
