I think you're on to something with the TPS. Both of mine ('91 & '92) make an audible click when the throttle is cracked.

I'm quite surprised that the plugs make that noticeable a difference. Is it possible that one of your copper plugs is faulty? (A long shot, too, is maybe the plug wire is failing and just runs better with the platinum plug - might be different resistance than the copper.) In general I have perceived here on the BB that non-turbo 240's run better on standard plugs than on platinum. NGK BPR6ES is a reliable, inexpensive plug that a lot of us rely on.
