Interesting hot start problem 700 1991

I've started having an interesting problem with my 740 since moving to Montana over a month ago. It won't start when it's warm, but only under certain conditions. After I take for a short drive say 5 miles, the weather outside is in the 30's. In the morning it starts fine, but when I drive home from work and shut it off, then try starting it again after a few minutes it won't start. It will turn the over, the tach will move a bit, but wont' fire up. If I wait about thirty minutes to an hour, it will startup again. I haven't had the problem when the weather has been warmer, and it drives fine otherwise.

To make it more interesting, yesterday I was having the problem not starting, I tried unhooking the Air Mass Meter from the airbox. (Not the electrical connection but letting air flow directly into the AMM.) When I tried this it started right up. When I shut it off, reconnected it, woudn't start. So if I disconnect it to get it started and reconnect it when running, idle lowers a bit, but stays running. Then runs fine. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what might be causing this problem. Any thoughts would be appreciated, it's hard finding anyone that knows Volvo in Western Montana.

Thanks, Craig Allen
