Automatic temp control problem, need advice 700 1985

I read in the Haynes manual where a possible problem with your heat like mine where it will rapidly click on and off and sometimes not work in different settings, that it could be the temp sensor in the cabin gone bad. The defrost works fine, blows strong and never cuts on and off. But in other settings this is the norm. Any ideas?
