I replaced my '88 740GLE distributor last year after intermittent stalling trouble. The new one was a Bosch, and it came complete, with a new cap, rotor and seals. Total bolt-on install.
Took me a half hour on the side of the road, in the dark, in the rain.
Car fired up immediately and neither leaks nor stalls.
Two 10mm bolts are all that need to be removed. You should set the timing afterward. (Not applicable to 89-up cars, although they wouldn't need to be replaced due to hall sensor failure either.)
