As noted, check coolant level both hot and cold. DO NOT open your cap when hot.

A new thermostat is only $11 or so and comes with a gasket. Took me 15 minutes to change mine. FOund 1 of the 3 I did lately had a broken piece inside, not closing properly.

It's cheap enough that it's not worth trying to test one or fiddle around with it.
