Rob is probably right about the mini-rebuild, since your OD only works when the fluid is cold (= thick), so the odds are that it is leaking past worn seals. But check the fluid level and make sure it is topped up. If so, it could be rebuild time. I partially cured a balky OD (didn't want to engage or stay that way when fully warmed up) by draining the ATF and refilling with Redline synthetic lubricant (MTL). Many years and 45,000mi later I'm still avoiding the (inevitable, eventually) rebuild.
