Will pitman arm puller work for ball joints? 700

Let me know how things went - I am about to replace the ball joints on my '89 740 with 110K miles, and want to know the best way to remove the joints.

Another thing I am concerned about - does replacing balljoints involve compressing the springs? Or can I separate the ball joints from the strut and just let the suspension dangle without worrying about an exploding spring?
