Pertronix install on 72E 1800 1972

This is from memory, so may or may not be 100% accurate...

Once the perlux is in the dist and properly gapped:

Take the black perlux wire and connect it to the white wire that used to connect to the condensor. This wire runs thru the tach and back to the "-" terminal on the coil. Don't connect the black wire directly to the neg terminal on the coil, or the tach won't work.

By the way - there's a spacer in the 'perlux' box that MUST NOT be used on the Volvo. MUST NOT.

Connect the red perlux wire to the "+" terminal on the coil.

Adjust the valves; then start the car, bring it up to temp, set the timing, readjust the idle... set the timing again, check the idle speed again. Drive around, enjoy the smoother idle and easier starting. Keep your points and condensor in a ziploc in the trunk just in case. After a week, check the timing and readjust the idle again.

Call me and I'll run ya through it over the phone; or I can fax the ipd instructions; or I'll mail them directly.

PS

Completely personal and not at all professional input (warning! rant!):

I buy stuff from Jeg's, Summit and Race Central. I buy a lot of car stuff - my car budget in the last 2 years is in excess of $20K.

In terms of generic 'car stuff' like the perlux/pertronix, these 'general car stuff' shops offer a lot of the same stuff as other, more Volvo related channels. Whenever possible, I _strongly_ prefer to buy from RPR, Yankee Trading, V-Performance, Foreign Autotech, Scandcar, Veteranproduktor, CVI, KGTrimning, Unitek, TME and ipd. I believe that keeping the biz in the Volvo family helps to keep the Volvo family strong, cooperative, and self sustaining. Yeah - I work at ipd - because I'm blessed with employment built on my passion, not because I know how to be a good salesman (I don't). Despite this, when I need brake rotors, it's I call RPR because 1) they have them and 2) Rusty knows and sells quality. When it's calipers, it's Yankee - because they rebuild them themselves with stainless pistons instead of whatever everyone else like Napa or Pep Boys offers. I don't have to ask about a warrantee. I know I'm getting quality from someone who knows what quality is.

This is my Volvo. It *will* receive the very best parts available.

As far as the perlux/pertronix goes, I doubt anyone other than ipd has trained their customer service reps 3 times in the last 2 years on how to install this ignition doodad on a _Volvo with armored cable and/or a tach_ rather than just 'a car.' We don't train with overheads and handouts: we bring the whole customer service team into the shop and do an install with everyone watching. Every question gets answered before we move on to the next step. Everyone gets their hands dirty.

Some of the price differential you'll see is simply marketing. Big companies like Jeg's are able to buy in much, much larger quantities than smaller companies like ipd; and because they do, they get parts at a lower price. It's the same reason www.shox.com can sell Bilsteins for less than ipd pays to get them in the door for resale. Volume.

For me, two questions arise. First: how hard is Jegs, or shox.com, going to work for the customer in terms of product support both in terms of installation and potential warrantee issues? Second: how familiar are Jegs, or shox.com, with the specific issues that might arise when installing, or attempting to install, a product on a _Volvo_? Do the guys at Jegs know that the VW Perlux isn't the same as the Volvo Perlux even though they're dimensionally identical? Does anyone there know why that is? Do the guys at shox.com know which Bilsteins do or don't use a spacer in the front strut? Any of them have firsthand experience with the Koni 'cut-a-strut' applications or how that affects installation on a brand new S60?

To simplify: do they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee on ever single thing they sell?

Sorry; I got a little out of hand. I mean no offense whatsoever. My point is simply this:

You get what you pay for.

With my best regards,

Cameron
