Also - with a jack lift the wheel off the ground near the outside edge of the lower arm. This will take all the stress of the joint, then you can yank the bottom of the wheel around to see if it is loose.

The most gutwrenching noise I've heard come from a car was on my 1800 when a small pebble got caught between the rotor and dust shield. I think it shook a filling or two loose and caused bats to veer of course in the vicinity.
