Starter Gremlins 140-160 1972

There is one other possibility. Try disconnecting the wire to the
smallest terminal on the starter solenoid. Its purpose is to bypass
the ignition ballast during cranking but if it gets a short in it
it may also keep the starter solenoid engaged.
While you are down there make sure the wires are connected right and not
shorted.
