database for nut/bolt/hex/socket/etc. sizes

Yes, let's do this.

Over time I have gotten into the habit of making notes in my repair manual at each step in a repair procedure. But I fell like I am one man trying to empty the ocean. Too much research or experience to be had that I'll never accomplish it.

And moving up to a different model (240 to 740, for example) and it is an entirely new learning curve to begin.

It is one thing to have the common size sockets, wrenches handy, but I just can't get the hang of looking at a nut and knowing what size I need for it.
It would be useful to know ahead of time which tool I need so I am not always dragging over uncessary sockets (which can get lost) or running back and forth the the tool cabinet.

Between oil changes, I still fumble every time about what size the drain plug is. (lessee, was is 15/16 or 1"?)

I have been thinking about what we could do toward making a visual database on individual FASTENERS - what they are in there sizes, etc. and where they go (many places or just on, special place) on the car.

Everbody, I'm sure, has a loose collection of bits and pieces -- fateners gathered or conserved from old cars, junkyard foraging, etc. How good would it be to pick one of these up, match it to our photo database and know it will help keep your splash pan bolted to the frame?

And those plastic interior trim fasteners? And engine wire harness tie downs? Exterior trim fastener types? (try finding replacemetns for those!)

Also good to know ahead of time what size nut a thing is in case you want to go buy a few in case you round one off or strip a bolt, for example.

One special case, is the inside nut on the sliding bolt for the Girling caliper on my '89 740 turbo. Seems I need a thin spanner on this, as standard wrences catch on the "hat" of this nut, or bind against the brake bracket.

I still don't know what size wrench I need to counter hold this nut so I can remove the sliding bolt

Might I also suggest there be a column for special notes, such as, the socket needs to be a deep welled one. At least that is the case on the 11mm socket needed for loosening the brake bleeder screws.
