First take the unit out and open up the odometer part. Check the plastic gear wheel. On the early instrument cluster they have a tendency to split because the hole in the wheel has a slightly smaller diameter than the shaft that it is mounted on.

If it isn't split in two, you may be able to add a dab of glue and lightly grip it with vise grips until it has dried. Mount it back on and see if it holds. If not get a replacement.
