Yet you say you cleaned the filter (or replaced it) and flushed in new fluid?
Generally that disengaging feel to these automatic transmissions is due to low fluid levels.
Was this car sitting for a long time? My '84 from the junkyard had that same no-go/go tranmission problem for a long time after I got it home and serviced the fluid. Still does it when cold.
Next you need to make sure the kickdown cable is not binding up due to rust inside it.
How well did the transmission downshift into 1st from higher gear? If it didn't want to sometimes, this is similar to mine. And you have my sympathy.
Also, check the shifter linkage just to make certain the transmission is getting into a drive or reverse gear in the first place.
How many miles on this thing?
