That "black thing" is only a switch that prevents the starter from working when the car's in gear.

But follow Trevor's good advice -- pull the starter first and examine the drive gear. It's far easier to replace the starter gear than the ring gear. If the problem is shared by both gears, then you'll be 50% better off with a new starter gear.

Digging in to the ring gear is a big job, particularly if you don't have a tranny jack.
