intermittant failure to start - '93 940 1993

This is one for those who know the 940 with the Rex-Regina system. On two mornings last week, our "new" 940 took three tries to start but then started and ran fine the rest of the day, no hesitation or stalling. Then one morning it wouldn't start at all. The information I have is:

1.You could hear the in-tank pump running while trying to start the car.

2.Using a spare spark plug, I connected to No. 1 spark wire, I saw no spark while the engine was cranking. No start at this time.

3.There were no codes set and the OBD gave 1-1-1 readout on both fuel and spark.

4. I did the Diagnostic Test Modes 2 and 3. As I got to the test for the RPM sensor, the engine started when I turned the key to crank over the engine. I also got a 1-4-1 (good) code for the RPM sensor. All other tests were good.

5. Today the car started fine several times.

6. I've cleaned and wriggled every connector I can find to recreate the problem with no results.

7. I've cleaned the throttle body, checked the TPS, cleaned the idle control motor.

8. Don't know how to check the coil or RPM sensor. I don't know if the RPM sensor is original or not. The coil looks like it would cost my firstborn to replace.

9. I have not yet done anything with the fuel relay. It's a new type which isn't supposed to interchange with the one in my 240 and I don't know if it can be resoldered.

Does anyone have some suggestions? My wife.gov is looking doubtfully the new car and prefers to use my daughter's '84 240. Thank BB'rs for your help.
