I have adjusted the valves three different times on three different cars by removing the hushers first, and replacing the hushers when I am done. All three cars ran fine on the first start up after adjustment.

I disagree with the suction cup theory. I look at the husher as a small rubber spring which keeps the adjusting shim against the cam lobe, yet allowing the valve to fully close.
