The invention of the airbag and the resulting legislation, was the result of extremely low seatbelt usage in the USA.
Up here in Canada, we have had seat belt laws ($125 fine) for years and seat belt usage is higher.
Without a seatbelt, airbags have a huge benefit.
Seatbelts provide about 92% of the protection, airbags offer only a marginal increase in protection to a seatbelt wearer.
The greatest protection of an airbag is in highspeed head on collision.
HOWEVER - the injuries and fatalities we have seen caused by low speed and parking lot impacts from early generation airbags far outweighs the advantages .
Just wear the seatbelt in your Volvo, and forget the airbag.
Not to mention -the airbag is a HUGE target for auto B&E's.
Stolen airbags are going for hundreds of $$$, while replacing the one stolen from your car will cost almost $2000.
