Im not sure what the book lists for this but I imagine it is quite a few ( 6-8 or more would not be out of line at all).

Are you looking into having this done on your own vehicle?

If so, is the shop about to perform the work properly equipped with ALL of the special tools REQUIRED to do the job properly.
A shop that works on Volvo diesels shoud have the book hours available and all of the factory tools neded. If I recall, the book hours were pretty accurate_


Aside from just replacing the head, the timing belt will need to be replaced , most likely the waterpump seal will need to be replaced, ( pump will be moved to adjust belt tension, keeping old seal in is risky) , cam will need to be timed, pump will need to be timed.


If they don't have all of the factory tools and the factory green manual, take it somewhere else. They will not get it right.This is one engine that you cannot take shortcuts on.

Sorry if I am sounding repetitive but I can't count the number of diesels that have been screwed up by normally decent mechanics armed with a chiltons manual thinking that they can just put some marks on belts/gears and yank it apart and put it back together. That doesn't work on the diesels. They never run right.
