Yes, it's important to know the difference- VOlvo's and almost all European cars use the "double flare" lines- the end flares out and back in. It almost looks like a rivet. Older American cars mostly used the single flare. Most newer ones are going to the double flare, probably for economic reasons rather than safety- they have all their parts made in the cheapest labor market anyway. When sourcing new lines, it's best to have the old lines in hand unless you're sure what you're looking for.
-FCP Groton stocks straight lengths of made-up brake lines as well as the correct hoses (just put one on an 88 740- cost $6.00!!)
-The flare nut size is 11mm. Your 7/16 may fit, but it's going to round off the nut and you'll be unhappy.
