"...if the tabs at the bottom front of the engine for routing the wiring harness were originally covered with rubber?"

Not 'til '84 or '85. My '81, my three '82s, and my '83 all have or had the sharp-edged bare metal tabs -- one cause of a nasty engine fire, which results in many good boneyard parts.

My '86 has the nifty rubber-covered clamp thingys.

Wrap extra tape or a piece of plastic harness loom around the harness where the tabs wrap around.
