What I did was put the back of car up on jackstands, then pull the instrument cluster. The two wires which carry the signal from the rear impulse transmitter connect to the back of the speedo (along with a third wire, which I presume is power. Anyway, connect a VOM to the two wires, and run the car in gear. Sure it's small pulsed DC (I think) coming up the wire, but I thought that ifr *anything* was coming up the wire then the transmitter and wiring was OK.
In my car, some current came up the wire. I then had a speedo shop look at the speedo head (the instrument itself), and they found something awry inside and fixed it. Works fine now.
