There are basically no tune up adjustments required for your engine (a B230F I presume), it's all computer controlled, but there are still a number of things you need to do to keep your engine running properly. There are basic checks that should be done such as brake pads, fluid levels and air box thermostat operation. There is basic maintenance that should be done like cleaning your PCV system flame trap and the throttle body throat. There are routine replacement items at scheduled intervals like oil and filter, timing belts, air filter, spark plugs, and fluid changes (rad, brake and tranny).
If you go to the Volvo Cars (North America) website, access the Owners' Circle (under Volvo Ownership) and browse the archives in the Library section you will find the original recommended service items and scheduled intervals for your model and year.
Be sure to use the 700-900 FAQ feature section of this website. Many of the 740's share the same engine configuration as your car so a great deal of this information applies to 240's as well. There you will find all kinds of tips on preventive maintenance and DIY procedures including changing the timing belt (be warned, you have a harmonic balancer crank pulley that can easily be ruined if you don't use appropriate methods like a holding tool). You can also use the site search facility (below) to lookup procedures and help troubleshoot all kinds of problems -the archives in particluar are a true goldmine.
Happy digging.
