Can't help you directly, but I have a 1982 with manual transmission with overdrive. The relay failed once, and the wiring in the shifter broke once.

Try taking apart the shifter and buttons to see if there are any broken wires; also use a multimeter to check to see if the switch works. If all of that is ok, checking the relay functionality may be something worth doing (someone else who understands where to probe with the multimeter to check the relay may be able to help you).
