Yes you may end up not using all pieces supplied. Some may be in the kit but may not apply to your year/model.

When water pump goes on be sure to lever it upwards compressing that O ring as the nut are tightened. You will see that 2 of the water pump holes are elongated to aid this step. Install and tighten those nuts first.

Did you receive new rubber cushers for the tops of the valve stems?
Are you checking valve clearance?
