I had to remove the distributor from the cylinder head and remove the timing belt from the camshaft sprocket to remove the head. At first the thing wouldn't run at all. I moved the timing belt one tooth (at a time) in either direction to get it to run. I then moved the distributor a little each way to get it to run better. I realize this is not the recommended technique, but it seemed to work, to a point. The car starts ok, idles perfectly and has decent acceleration, however, it makes a clacking sound that I assume relates to the timing. I guess the other alternative is an exhaust leak, but I don't see any. I brought it to the mechanic because I figured (a) I would just screw it up more with my technique, and (b) the wife was getting pretty upset with me because I had already spent the better part of three weekends on this project. Thanks for your advice.
