Some possible causes that come to mind are:

Springs have broken or fallen off of the centrifugal advance.
The vacuum retard isn't working.
The plug wires are stuck in the wrong places on the distributor cap (90 deg rotated) and you can't swing the distributor far enough to get it back into proper time.
Fuel pressure regulator is set too low causing it to run too lean.

Have you put a timing light on it to see what the advance is really at? You kind of need to do that in order to know where you stand and to see how the advance is behaving.
