The solenoid on the D type overdrive has 2 circuits, one pulls the plunger in the other holds it.
Its fairly common for the ends of the windings to break where they're soldered. If you pull the runner cap off, and remove the platic end cover you can see the ends of the windings. Inspect and re solder.
Once you've had the whole lot apart it's worth setting the solenoid up properly. It involves poking a rod through the operating arm behind the cover on tyhe side of the overdrive and checking with an ammeter that only the holding coil is live. If you need proper instructions I'll write some.
