Not the lockout switch.

1) soldered new wire onto the solenoid, instead of new wire crimped on the stub of the original 37-year-old wire.

2) reflowed all solder on the end of the solenoid -- I think this may have been the problem: old slightly fractured joint finally connecting when it got hot.

3) burnished the contacts as long as I was in there.

Seems to work perfectly now.
