Most of the ones I have taken out were of diecast zinc alloy.
On the 122, maybe the 444/544, moisture gets in around the windshield
and down the firewall, into the jute padding between the steel floor
and the rubber mat. It ferments and becomes fairly acid, rusting out
the floor where it is not protected by galvanic corrosion of the zinc
alloy switch. Needless to say the switch housing, being the sacrificial
anode, also in a low spot in the floor, takes a lot of abuse. It's a wonder
they last any time at all!
