I've had some pretty worn boxes on my car before, but never had one suddenly just give up the ghost. They usually just get looser and sloppier in gradual increments. Keeping oil in it is a pain and mess when the bottom seal is shot, but slows the detrioration down. I've heard you can just pump it full of axle grease to if the bottom seal is letting oil go right on out.
