Solder to the rescue...

It's true that non-lead solder has started to appear, but the normal solder you find in the shops - at least those I usually frequent - will typically be 60/40 lead/tin.

On a general note on solder, when soldering steel to brass, silver solder is my preferred poison. When I'm scratchbuilding my brass pan slotcar chassis with piano wire suspension, I know that the silver-soldered joints won't fail me even at high-speed crashes. Provided of course I have done a good job cleaning the parts first, and you can't be too religous in doing this. Some good hints on soldering and preparations for soldering can be found here:
