Allow me to assume the car has an automatic; most did.
I owned a '90 744/B234 for about a week. I think it's a poor car, and here's my beef.
The powerband of the B234 is narrow and high in the rev range. The automatic trans is not figured to shift that high, so to make up for it, Volvo installed a 4.10:1 rear axle. That makes the car relatively loud at highway speeds, and even in town, the engine feels like it's always straining or in the wrong gear.
Of course, that's just one man's opinion, but if you have the opportunity, drive the car around for a few hours and see if you agree.
OTOH, if this is one of the rare manual trans B234 cars, WOW. The axle is lower and since you can pick your own gear, it can be a fun ride.
