Our 240 has a 3:73 rear and the 740 a 4:10 rear. I'm not sure, but I think the 240 gets better highway mileage, and the 740 better around town mileage. I tested the 240 far more than the 740. I think I'm going to test the 740 on this. Some say rear axles are no longer an issue, since the trans and the rear end up with a 1:1 ratios kind of free spinning at the higher speeds; and others say it is and issue. I am no expert and cannot say who is correct.
