Idle higher after muffler replacement

About a week ago I replaced the rusted out rear muffler on my 1988 740 turbo. An unexpected consequence is a higher idle. It used to idle around 750 rpm (using the car's tach). The tachometer now shows an idle of around 1,500. Is this just coincidental or is there a relationship between the muffler and idle speed? I have read the idle speed adjustment FAQ and see that there is a great risk of me screwing things up (especially because I do not own a tach), so I am not sure what to do next.
