My 145 had been perpetually hard to tune for a while now. Never really seemed to reflect adjustments to the mixture I would make. These are HIF carbs, mind you. Anyway, I noticed that the jet bearing was not moving per adjustments to the mixture screw. I took off the float bowl to find this...



The jet bearing lock nut has worked itself out and let the jet bearing move up and down, letting the mixture do whatever it felt like. Tightened it down and all is well. Well enough to take a test drive and have the center U-joint explode, that is. But at least it ran well!! Those Skinner's Union carbs are the darnedest things. Brilliant design once you understand them. Maybe one of these days I will...
