turbo spool up noise

My son has noticed that the turbo on my 1988 740 wagon seems to be making a more pronounced and more frequent "spool-up/spool-down" sound than it used to make. The car is otherwise running ok (idle problem fixed) and there is no smoke. Should I be concerned? Is this a sign the turbo is failing? The car has about 141,000 miles on it.
