Ugly sunroof problem 700 1988

On my 91, there is a gizmo (for lack of a better word) that looks kind of like a paper clip that has been unfolded sideways...or like an elongated "S" laying on its side. That piece controls the raising and lowering of the tilt, and pulling the sunroof below the roofline for retraction. The one on my passenger side snapped and caused the same situation you describe. Hope this helps.
