No CV joints up front - just good ol' U-joints in the driveshaft.

If you felt that strange sensation through steering wheel feedback, then perhaps your power steering is a little flaky. Checked your fluid lately? But typically, things that go wrong with steering tend to make the steering effort heavier, not lighter.

Other things to check are sway bar end links, and the rear A-arm bushings.
