Shop around for a good used engine. You should find one for about $250-600, I'd guess. They're not in demand, so they're usually not expensive.

(Just for calibration, I bought a '91 non-turbo engine AND AW71L with 140k miles from someone for $100, delivered to my house. I saw the car drive beforehand, engine sounded new. The engine is complete with all Bendix Rex-regina stuff still on it -- ready to drop into my car when wife pulls a similar stunt.)
