Tailgate will not open 700 1989

just opened mine up last w/e and fixed it.
The auto lock mechanism in the truck lid had stopped working in the "locked position". took the inside cover off, took the latch out, spray lubed it with PB,wiggled the wires to the latch motor, tried the auto lock again with the latch disconnected and it worked again. Put it back together and it has been working fine.

Then again it could be very easy. Someone could have moved the child safety lock on the latch to the lock position.
