Engine dies - when all else fails consider this 700 1988

He told me that he simply unplugged the tach. He suspected the problem is in the instrument cluster proper; since sometimes the volt/fuel gauge are dead at startup, but respond after a door closing or tap on the dash. Try disconnecting the tach as close as possible to the cluster. If it still stalls, move closer along the "wiring trail" to the ignition.
When I come across another 740 instrument panel, I'll install it and see if the problem returns. Just a pet peeve, I hate "dead" gauges ;-)

Cheers,
Andy
