My idle setting has a mind of it's own 1800 1973

As George says, but also look at the screws that hold the throttle plate to the shaft. If they are wiggling around (or going through your motor) the plate would not always be centered when the throttle was closed, letting extra air through. I personally think you should get your distributor tip top before doing anything drastic.
