Going crazy, need to fix 200 1983

Is there any slop side to side in the shifter lever??

The small nylon bushings at the bottom of the shifter lever wear - then when the shifter moves left to go into 1st, the actual shifter rod is not lined up with the first gear positon in the transmission.

Try lifting the reverse ring - moving the shifter slightly to the left of its normal position, and see if that helps...

I am going through the same thing right now till I change it.
