There's no set interval for changing coils... if you have a problem that seems ignition-related and you've ruled out everything else, the coil would be something to try swapping.

It's perfectly normal for coils to get hot enough that you can't hold your fingers on comfortably. It's not normal for them to get so hot you'll get a blister.

I think -- not positive -- the points will interchange between any D-jet distributors. Pop open the caps and look... if they look the same, they are the same.
