Memories-"There's a flame from her stack- blowin smoke black as coal-six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight"
A six inch flame was favored for the Cummins NH-220, a supercharged NHRS 320 would blow a nice flame but when turbos took over the fire went out but emissions went down. The flame was the result of extra fuel burning when it hit the atmosphere, Extra fuel just spools up the turbo-more air for combustion = no smoke!
About the gasket; some gasket "cutters" would laminate two thinner pieces together when the spec called for a thicker part. Saw this when I worked for McCord gaskets. The laminated gaskets were subject to what is known as "gasket motion"
