The third gear lockout switch in on the tranny, right side, and dang near inaccessable. Visible, yes, wrenchable - not for me.
That rascal seems to be giving you fits. Could be the wire connection, could be the switch. When in 3rd, the lockout switch is closed and provides a ground side into the o/d relay circuit board.
If the ground is lost (out of 3rd gear) ground is lost and the relay disengages. So - if something happens that the ground continues even if another gear, the o/d can stay engaged.
Losing that ground may be due to wiring, that switch, or a crack in the relay circuit board soldering. Hmmmm. NOT losing the ground Hmmmmmmm.
Hope this helps,
Bob
