It kind of sounds like a problem with the instrument itself. I don't know if the 740 and 940 are 100% interchangeable, but you would think so. Have you compared part numbers? I also wonder if it could be something like a bad ground connection. If you purchased it from a bone yard, you might have to return it and try another one.
