Buy and install a new thermostat and gasket. It won't hurt, and the thermostats wear out.

Where I live in Washington state, we don't have your cold weather. When I start my car in the morning, it takes about 1/4 mile of driving until I notice the heater putting out warmer air. My the time I have driven 1 mile, the engine is at about operating temperature.
